A hat-trick of good news for Killiney Beach has come in April and May 2021: Blue Flag status awarded back after several years; funding allocated for a new facility for outdoor water-based activities; taking a spot in the Lonely Planet’s list of top 10 beaches in Ireland for 2021.

Killiney Beach awarded Blue Flag for 2021

Killiney Beach is among the record of 93 beaches awarded the Blue Flag status for 2021 on 25 May 2021. This is great news for the locals of Killiney, Ballybrack and surrounds. Killiney Bay Community Council (KBCC) congratulates all involved in getting the Blue Flag back for Killiney Beach after four years. A huge shout out to all our volunteers who take part in regular beach cleans and who kept things ticking along during the various lockdowns of the last year.

We congratulate our colleagues at dlr and Clean Coasts for taking the time to engage and help to make this happen. An Taisce presented the award today to dlr Cleansing and Beaches Section. The Blue Flag will fly from 1 June 2021.

New facility for outdoor water-based activities

This news comes just weeks after Killiney Beach was announced as one of the beaches around the country to be awarded funding for a new facility for outdoor water-based activities. Announced 15 April 2021, this investment means a new, modern, accessible changing and showering facility on the beach. Great news for local water sports enthusiasts, beach users and local business. Developed in partnership between Fáilte Ireland and Local Authorities, this scheme aims to enhance the overall visitor experience to the beach.

Lonely Planet list of top beaches in Ireland

And on 6 April 2021, Killiney Beach was named in the Lonely Planet’s top 10 beaches in Ireland for 2021. And why? Not only because of the wonderful views of the wide arc of the bay from Killiney Hill, said to ‘resemble the Bay of Naples’, but also because it has become a haven for all kinds of visitors and an array of sports – swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, paragliding, hang-gliding, surfing, windsurfing or fishing. Popular with families, sports enthusiasts and walkers on any given day, whether rain, hail or shine, Killiney Beach is described as a ‘treat’ of a city beach.
